Sousou: When is a girl a girl?

When is a girl a girl?

The following recount is based on a barely one-hour interview. It is an attempt to create a narrative around Sousou, despite her being extremely selective about what she wishes to share.

It is 2014. A bus clandestinely carrying young men and women across the Syrian-Lebanese border stops in the Marj area.

Sousou, 20 years of age, stepped off the bus, then waited for her uncle to pick her up and drive her home to one of her brothers who had preceded her to Lebanon. She lived with her brother for about a year before moving in with her sister for a few months until her mother arranged for a tent for both of them in one of Deir El-Ahmar camps, located between the mountainside of Bsharre and the entrance to the Beqaa plain.

Since she first settled in camp 042 around 2016, she struggles against monotony, avoids leaving the house except when necessary โ€“ buying groceries and medicine, or visiting her uncleโ€™s house nearby. She hesitates, stammers, recounting an incident she has recently experienced: โ€œI was on my way to visit my brother when some young men intercepted me and asked โ€˜Do you blxx? How much for the hour?โ€™ I yelled at them, so they ran awayโ€. Sousou gets blamed for the violence sheโ€™s subjected to every time she chooses to express herself: โ€œOn my way to the pharmacy, two guys stopped me, tore my clxxxxx, I went back home, my parents believed I deserved it since โ€œIโ€™m unable to man up.โ€

Her parents do not know she in fact shares their vision of her getting married and starting a family. She rejects men whenever they ask for casual sxx. She is looking for love, for someone who cares for her, whom she cares for. Someone who would grant her a long-lost sense of safety. She dreams of living in a one-story house with a backyard where she would sit with her partner at candlelight. Two bedrooms, a kitchen where sheโ€™d prepare mulukhiyeh, a living area with red cushions and a big TV screen, two chairs in front of a chimney โ€“ Her partner would sit on a chair while she would stagger between his lxx and her chair.

The lack Sousou feels, she tries to fill it through her fantasy in an attempt to make up for the turmoil and the solitude. That is where her desire for safety and stability stems from, on the condition of being loved. Her concern is the love she expects from the other. At the same time, she hopes to intimately share with that other her deferred plans: they would work together at a hair salon or a restaurant, adopt two children โ€“ a boy and girl whose names โ€œhe would chooseโ€, although she would rather call them Celine and Joe, after a Lebanese woman and her son.

Celine was Sousouโ€™s family boss whenever they went down to the Beqaa plain for tobacco harvest in summertime before the โ€œevents'โ€ unfolded. She recalls her life on the farmland where she would see Joe, tall and good mannered. She admired him greatly, so much so as her first love, never revealing it, waiting in vain for it to be reciprocated.

Sousou spent a serene childhood alongside her relatives in Tel Aqareb village in rural Aleppo until she turned 14. Her feminine traits started getting noticed. She would spend her days between home and school, after being mocked by her coworkers for her walk and her voice. She preferred isolation over interacting with her hurtful surroundings. She admitted her attraction to young men: one of them was a friend of her brother and her schoolmate, with a two-year difference and patriarchy standing in between.

Sousou believes her sxxxxxl attraction and love for men emanate from her desire to be โ€œa xxxl.โ€ For Sousou, there is no difference between lust for young men and โ€œbeing a girl.โ€

The rural girl found answers to her gxxxer-related questions through Google, as she never had access to the search engine prior to her arrival in Lebanon. According to Google, a category of people may be attracted to the same xxx, and those have civil rights somewhere in the northern hemisphere. There, she could be a girl: she could wear womenโ€™s clothes, put make-up on, let her hair grow long, become txxxxxxxder, love and be loved by someone she could build a happy family with.

Sousou was convinced by Googleโ€™s information. She put all her hopes at the doorsteps of the UNHCR offices in Zahleh, where she sat for three interviews linked to refugee resettlement programs in one of the following countries: โ€œThe USA, Australia, Canada, Belgium, and Norway. It doesnโ€™t matter to me, as long as itโ€™s a European country that is accepting.โ€

Her file is currently being reviewed, โ€œsubmitted to higher managementโ€ as she was told after repeated enquiries on her part, just like many refugees in Lebanon awaiting a decision by any embassy. She breaks the monotony of waiting by chatting with men over TikTok which she carefully uses out of fear of her parents finding out. She reveals that xxxx is โ€œa xxxโ€ and not โ€œa girlโ€ to those she gets comfortable with. Some turn their back on her, others maintain the conversation. Sheโ€™ll keep entertaining herself until she finds her soulmate: someone who will love her and accept her for who she is
